Begin the clearance audit by accessing the attic or mechanical room where the gas appliance vent—typically a Category I double-wall B-vent or a single-wall connector pipe—passes through combustible ceiling framing or roof decking; use a high-lumen flashlight to verify a minimum 1-inch radial clearance for B-vent or a 6-inch clearance for single-wall vent pipes from all wood framing, insulation, or stored debris; inspect the base of the flue at the draft hood or appliance collar to ensure the pipe is mechanically secured with at least three sheet-metal screws per joint to prevent de-coupling during thermal expansion; look specifically for discoloration, pitting, or white powdery oxidation on the exterior of the vent, which indicates back-drafting or corrosive flue gases escaping into the building envelope; examine the fire-stop or ceiling-support plate to confirm it is not buried under loose-fill insulation, which can trap heat and lead to a localized pyrolysis of the surrounding timber; check the vertical alignment of the flue to ensure it maintains a continuous upward slope of at least 1/4 inch per foot to facilitate the buoyant rise of carbon monoxide and combustion byproducts; inspect the storm collar and flashing from the attic side for water-tracking or rust-streaks that degrade the structural integrity of the vent supports; finalize the audit by ensuring that no plastic or flexible materials are within the heat-radius of the metal flue, including electrical wiring or non-rated spray foam.
