Begin the specialized Hydrological-Automation-Reliability-Audit by performing a Solenoid-Electrical-and-Mechanical-Analysis of all irrigation control valves. The primary objective is to verify the operational integrity of the electromagnetic plungers that govern water flow to each zone, as a failing solenoid can cause a valve to Stick-ON (resulting in catastrophic basement flooding or 10,000-gallon water waste) or Fail-to-Open (causing total landscape mortality during a heatwave). Start by performing the Continuity-and-Ohmic-Resonance-Audit: use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance across the two leads of each solenoid. To achieve a Gold Standard of diagnostic accuracy, verify the reading is between 20 and 60 Ohms; a reading of 0 Ohms indicates a Dead-Short that will Fry your expensive irrigation controller, while an Infinite-Resistance (OL) reading indicates a snapped internal coil. Conduct the Manual-Bleed-Screw-Verification: manually turn the bleed screw (or the solenoid itself one-quarter turn) to verify the valve diaphragm opens and closes with Zero-Stiction; if the valve takes more than 5 seconds to shut off after the bleed screw is tightened, the internal Metering-Orifice is clogged with sand or the rubber diaphragm is Heat-Seized.
